I’ve never been one to sit at home quietly on the weekends. So when I saw that the band.do to-do list mentioned strawberry picking over the weekend, I thought, “Why not?” My friend looked up local farms and we found one just minutes shy of where my brother-in-law grew up.
Whitley Farms in Sharpsburg, GA is a little farm that prides itself in growing organic products without any pesticides. While strawberry season is pretty much over here, we found a great selection of blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries. Knowing that we would be picking berries in the sweltering Georgia heat, I went with lightweight layers in dark colors (to ensure I didn’t stain my clothes in berries). Whitley Farms is nice in that it’s an open field so we didn’t worry too much about fighting through prickly brambles or getting eaten by bugs. We could just concentrate on picking berries and staying cool under the blazing hot sun.
In addition to berries, Whitely Farms also has an adorable little market where you can buy other organically grown produce from their farms. They also sell their own local honey (made on the farm) as well as deliciously sweet strawberries shipped from North Carolina. We ended up picking and buying several pounds of fresh berries. I’m thinking we might need a recipe for some jams and preserves soon so please share your favorites if you have any!
Have you gone berry picking this year? What are your favorite recipes?
